She signed us (Mother- and Father-in-Law, and I) up for the morning shift at
Second Harvest Heartland. They are a regional "food bank"...which is a collector / distributor of food products - which then are moved along to food shelves where people get access to their allocations.
First we took a class they call "Hunger 101"...in which we did calculations on how to spend our income as different scenarios of typical users of the local food shelf. Father-in-Law and I were Angela and Miguel Gutierrez...with 3 kids. He worked part time...I worked full time...after all that, and rent, auto, utilities, healthcare and daycare we had exactly $6 / day for food. After running to the virtual grocery store we only ended up being able to buy 2700 calories we needed out of 9000 recommended for the entire family. So I filled out the actual 19-page form that is required to get assistance and we were able to score an extra $11/day...and even then we were unable to get the 9000 calories we needed per day. It is quite the minefield out there when you are barely scraping by. I can't even imagine trying to do all this in a second language.
After that learning experience we were off to the meat of the morning....repackaging food for delivery to the food shelves.
