Stumbled across an
ancient list of "cheap eats" from MSPMag...in which they listed the roast beef at
Maverick's in Roseville - which I had never heard of...but an Internet search confirmed was still open.
Two doors down from
our failure to find good green chili at Ol' Mexico resides the unassuming storefront of this ma & pa sandwich shop. The menu boasted open-faced sandwiches, burgers, brisket sandwiches and - what I was there for - the roast beef sandwich.
Strangely I was the only one there when I walked in - but by the time I left 20 minutes later 20 people had come in...so I guess they do a rather "feast or famine" service as people briskly pass through.

Once you receive your sammich they have a condiments bar with every option people have ever considered slathering on beef; jus, prepared horseradish, "creamy horseradish", Heinz BBQ sauce, "tangy BBQ" sauce, "ancho-chipotle" sauce, "horsey-dijon" sauce, spicy brown mustard, giardiniera, sour pickles chips, pepperoncini, banana peppers, dill pickle chips, Frank's Red Hot and jalapeños. Which I sampled widely (although I would haveneeded another 3 sandwiches to test them all correctly).
Must Have
----------
+ Prepared Horseradish - so perfect on roast beef...with that fantastic eye-watering sinus burn.
+ "Horsey-Dijon" sauce - this will definitely work
Very Good
----------
+ Giardiniera - nice heat, could use a bit more variety of veggies in it - my batch only had jalepeños and carrots in it - but maybe it was the scoop out of the jar.
+ Roast Beef Sandwich
| If I weren't dieting I probably would have opted for the "Large" Roast Beef - and after having the small I would guess the ratio of beef to bun would be preferable on the large (not that the small was skimpy). They butter and toast the buns and then slice beef on the spot for it. The beef was pink and tender with nice flavor - my only gripe would be the temperature, it seemed to be "warm" instead of "hot"...and that would have made a lot of difference in the first bite magic. I would certainly go back assuming that this temperature was a side effect of me being the first person in the room after a service pause. |

Good
---------
+ "Ancho-Chipotle" sauce - a little bland, but will work in a pinch
Take It Or Leave It
----------
? Spicy Brown Mustard - not really magic on roast beef in my book
